Vastu for western-style homes: open plans, garages and basements

How Vastu reads the features common in homes in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia.

Updated · 4 min read

Homes built in North America, the UK and Australia often have features that classic Vastu texts never described. A review does not treat these as faults by default; it looks at where they sit and how they are used.

Features a review looks at

  • Open-plan kitchens: where the cooking range sits within the shared space
  • Attached garages: which zone they occupy and what is stored there
  • Basements: whether they are used for living, storage or utilities
  • Central staircases: how much of the middle of the home they take
  • En-suite bathrooms: their position relative to bedrooms and the centre
  • Main entrances set by the street layout, which usually cannot move

What can usually change

In most homes abroad the structure stays as it is. Room use, furniture placement, colours, lighting and storage can change easily, and these come first in a review. Any alteration follows local building rules and, for rented or strata homes, the lease or owners corporation.

Before you buy

If you are choosing between listings, a review of each floor plan before you make an offer is the simplest time to compare them. Share the listing plan, the direction of north and photographs.
