Vastu vs feng shui: how they differ for your home

Two traditions about space and direction, from India and China, compared in plain terms.

Updated · 4 min read

Vastu Shastra comes from India and feng shui from China. Both look at how a building sits, how its spaces are arranged and how people use them. Outside India, Vastu is often described as Indian feng shui, which is a useful starting point but not an exact match.

The main differences

  • Origin: Vastu draws on Indian architectural texts; feng shui on Chinese traditions
  • Framework: Vastu uses the Vastu Purusha Mandala, a grid laid over the plot or plan; feng shui commonly uses the bagua map
  • Elements: Vastu works with earth, water, fire, air and space; feng shui with wood, fire, earth, metal and water
  • Focus: Vastu gives weight to directions and the centre of the home; feng shui to the flow of energy, called qi, through the space
  • Stage: Vastu is often applied at planning stage, though it is used for existing homes too; feng shui is often applied to interiors

Should you combine their remedies?

The two traditions sometimes suggest different things for the same corner of a home. Mixing remedies from both can lead to conflicting changes. It is clearer to follow one approach consistently, and to ask your consultant how any existing items fit.

Which one suits you?

Many families choose the tradition they grew up with or feel connected to. Neither is scientifically proven. A Vastu review gives a structured, written view of your plan, with practical changes first, and works alongside your architect and building rules.
