In traditional Vastu the kitchen is commonly placed in the south-east, linked to fire, with the north-west often cited as an alternative. Kitchens in the north-east or at the centre of the plan are generally treated with caution.
The traditional convention
The south-east is associated with the fire element in traditional texts, which is why cooking areas are placed there. In practice, kitchens in flats are fixed by the builder, so a review also looks at where the stove, sink and refrigerator sit within the kitchen.
Why a plan-specific review matters
Traditions and consultants differ in detail, and a real home rarely matches a textbook layout. The useful question is how your plan sits, which observations matter most and what can be adjusted without construction.
What a consultant checks
- Where the kitchen sits in the plan
- Where the stove, sink and storage sit inside it
- The direction the cook faces
- How the kitchen relates to the entrance, dining area and pooja space
- What can be rearranged without construction
Limits
A room's position is one input among many. It does not replace structural, safety or legal checks, and it does not promise any outcome. Where moving a room is impractical, a review looks at use, furniture and smaller adjustments first.
