Vastu is spelled several ways, and people search for it under many names. Vastu, Vaastu, Vasthu and Vastu Shastra all refer to the same traditional Indian system for planning buildings and spaces. Classical sources also use Vastu Vidya and Sthapatya Veda.
Is Vastu the same as astrology?
No. Vastu works on the building: its orientation, layout and the placement of rooms. Astrology, called Jyotish in India, is a separate tradition that reads birth charts and timing. The two are often mentioned together, and some practitioners offer both, but they are different disciplines with different inputs. A Vastu review needs your plan or site, not your birth details.
How does Vastu relate to Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is a Chinese tradition that also arranges spaces by direction and surroundings. It is sometimes described as a comparable system, and in some countries Vastu is introduced as Indian Feng Shui. They have different methods, vocabulary and conventions, so advice from one should not be mixed with the other without a clear reason.
Common terms
- Vastu Shastra: the traditional body of knowledge on architecture and spatial planning
- Vaastu, Vasthu: alternate spellings of the same word
- Sthapatya Veda, Vastu Vidya: classical names used in older sources
- Jyotish: Indian astrology, a separate discipline
- Feng Shui: the Chinese tradition of arranging spaces by direction
What this means when you choose a consultant
Ask what the consultant will review and what you will receive in writing. If the work is about a property, it should start from your plan, plot or premises. Vastu is a traditional discipline, and no consultant can promise financial, health or business outcomes.
